Self-Introduction to Japanese customers,---
Hello, My name is Alvin Taylor and I am from the Hopi Tribe. I am from the village of Shungopavi in Second Mesa, Arizona. I have been doing silversmithing for around 20 years. I am basically self taught but I do give some credit to Clifton Mowa. I also took some classes from Roy Talahaftewa a couple of years ago and those were wax carving and stone setting.
The two techniques I use most are overlay and tufa casting. Overlay is a process where two sheets of silver or gold are used. The topsheet is cut with designs and soldered to a solid sheet of silver. It is then matted (textured by hand hammering little indentation with small chisel like tools). The piece is then formed and the findings put on and oxidized. It is then buffed and polished.
In tufa casting, Tufa is used (rock that may be a volcanic by product). They are cut into blocks and mated. One side is then carved with a design and a sprue hole is also carved along with some air vents. The blocks are then dusted with soot and tied together. The silver is then melted in a crucible and poured into the tufa. The blocks are then untied and opened revealing the piece. It is cleaned and findings put on and wire brushed for the final finish.
Stone can be incorporated in both overlay and tufa cast pieces. Also overlay and tufa casting can be combined in a piece of work. I also sign all my work with my mark.

I need the copyright because---
Too many authentic pieces are being copied and pirated by un-scrupulous people and the imitations can hurt the original artist's reputation. It also diminishes the value of authentic works. A lot of mass produced pieces are out there and unsuspecting customers are being led to believe they are getting authentic pieces. This not only hurts the customer but the artist as well.
